Doncaster Rovers Belles will not be represented in the Team Great Britain women’s football team in this month’s Olympic Games.
But veteran midfielder Sue Smith will be working as part of the BBC commentary team alongside former England team-mate Faye White, who is pregnant.
Smith, who boasts 93 England caps, and who has twice been voted International Footballer of the Year, was named in the original ‘long’ list.
But a cruciate knee ligament injury - which ruled her out for the season - on her Belles debut, put paid to her chances of selection.
“The bulk of the squad are all England players, plus two Scottish players Kim Little and Ifeoma Dieke,” she told The Star.
“It is a great honour to be picked for all the girls because this could be the first and last time a GB team competes because not all the home nations are in favour.
“That is what makes missing out on the chance of playing in the Olympics so hard to take.”
The host nation take on New Zealand in the first of their three group games at the Millennium Stadium on July 25 - two days before the official opening of the Olympics.
Hope Powell’s side are back in action in Cardiff the following Tuesday against Cameroon before playing Brazil at Wembley on July 31.
The top two in each of the three groups qualify for the last eight along with the two best third-placed teams.
