Belles visit Bluebell Wood Hospice.
Friday, January, 13, 2012 was certainly not an unlucky day for the Bluebell Wood Hospice and Savanagh Taylor, aged nine, from Doncaster, as Doncaster Belles Ladies Football Club presented a £250 cheque to World Cup referee Howard Webb MBE who is Bluebell Wood’s patron.
He outlined that it costs over £2.5 million every year to provide care and support to children and young adults with a shortened life expectancy.
As the inaugural Women’s Super League came to a close, the Belles invited partners, backers and supporters to join Howard at the Keepmoat Stadium for their end of season awards where Friday’s donated funds were raised.
On arrival at Bluebell Wood, the Belles were greeted by Savanagh who took the opportunity to meet with Howard and the Belles players there on the day, Julie-Ann Russell and Aine O’Gorman.
The Ladies team are following in the footsteps of the local men’s professional clubs of the Steel City of Sheffield, Rotherham Utd and Doncaster Rovers who have all supported Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice as part of The Football League’s partnership with Help the Hospices.
Vice-Chair and Business Manager Alan Smart said of the day: “What a massively humbling experience, it was the first visit for all of us at the club.
Smart went on to add: “I don’t think any of us would mind saying that we were all emotionally affected on the day and hopefully in some way our small donation can help.”
Team manager John Buckley said: “We’ll definitely maintain our link with Bluebell Wood and look to do something going forward in 2012.”
“I’m thinking of something around one of our games in this season’s Women’s Super League for the families.”
