Julie-Ann joined the Rovers Belles in January 2012 from Peamount United.

Russell began her soccer career with Salthill Devon, and scored an extra–time winner in the 2007 Under 16 FAI Cup final. The following week Russell helped Galway Ladies win the FAI Senior Women's Cup final. The victory ensured that Galway and Russell qualified for the 2008–09 UEFA Women's Cup.

In 2010 Russell featured as Salthill Devon played in the FAI Cup final, but were defeated 4–2 by Peamount United.

Russell signed a contract with American W-League club Los Angeles Strikers in April 2011. In August 2011, she played for Peamount United in the 2011–12 UEFA Women's Champions League.

Julie-Ann is the sister of Sligo Rovers midfielder John Russell.
